Quick Answers

Start with the question customers ask first.

This FAQ is written for UAV builders, sourcing teams and technical buyers who need a practical motor shortlist before sending an inquiry.

01

Which motor should I choose?

Start with propeller size, rated voltage, thrust target and application. Then compare current, power and weight.

02

What does KV mean?

KV describes no-load motor speed per volt. Higher KV is usually paired with smaller propellers; lower KV is usually paired with larger propellers.

03

Is this for FPV drones?

Pi Thrust focuses on 10-18 inch UAV propulsion systems. These are not the same category as typical 5 inch racing FPV setups.

04

What should I send?

Send propeller size, voltage, ESC plan, takeoff weight, payload and application. Support can then confirm the motor match.

Selection

Drone motor selection questions

How do I choose a UAV brushless motor?

Start with propeller size, rated LiPo voltage, target thrust per motor and UAV application. After that, compare maximum thrust, peak current, maximum power and motor weight. For Pi Thrust motors, the main catalog range covers 10 inch, 13-15 inch, 15-17 inch and 17 inch propeller applications.

Should I choose a motor only by maximum thrust?

No. Maximum thrust is only one reference value. A practical selection also checks current draw, ESC rating, battery voltage, propeller size, motor temperature, frame airflow and the aircraft takeoff weight.

Which Pi Thrust motor is suitable for 10 inch propellers?

The Pi Thrust 3115 is listed for 10 inch propeller applications. Catalog data shows 900KV, 6S rated voltage and 4,600g maximum thrust, with applications including surveying, inspection and security.

Which Pi Thrust motors support 13-15 inch propellers?

Pi Thrust 4312, 4315, 4320 and 5215 are listed for 13-15 inch propeller applications. They use different KV and rated voltage configurations, so the final choice should be based on voltage, target thrust, peak current and application.

Which Pi Thrust motor is for 15-17 inch propellers?

The Pi Thrust 5315 is listed for 15-17 inch propeller applications. Catalog data shows 420KV, 12S rated voltage, 8,400g maximum thrust and applications including agriculture, heavy-lift and large industrial UAV.

Which Pi Thrust motor is for 17 inch propellers?

The Pi Thrust 5008 is listed for 17 inch propellers. Catalog data shows 300KV, 6S rated voltage, 2,800g maximum thrust and applications including extra-large aerial and cinematic UAV.

How much thrust should one motor provide?

The target thrust per motor depends on total takeoff weight, motor count and safety margin. Send the full aircraft configuration to Pi Thrust support if you need confirmation. Do not select only from the unloaded aircraft weight.

Why do two motors with similar propeller size have different current and thrust?

Motor size, KV, winding, voltage, propeller pitch, blade count and test condition all affect thrust and current. A higher thrust result may also require higher current, so current and temperature should be checked together with thrust.

Basics

Brushless motor, KV and propeller questions

What is a brushless motor in a drone?

A brushless motor uses electronic commutation through an ESC instead of mechanical brushes. In multirotor UAVs, brushless motors are commonly used because they can provide high power density, fast response and reliable operation when matched correctly with ESCs and propellers.

What does motor KV mean?

KV describes the no-load speed of a motor per volt, usually expressed as RPM/V. A higher KV motor tends to spin faster at the same voltage and is usually paired with smaller propellers. A lower KV motor is commonly paired with larger propellers that need more torque.

Does higher KV always mean more power?

No. Higher KV mainly indicates higher no-load speed per volt, not automatically higher usable power. The usable propulsion result depends on voltage, propeller load, current, motor size, cooling and ESC capability.

How does propeller diameter affect a drone motor?

A larger diameter propeller sweeps more air and can generate more thrust at lower RPM, but it also increases motor load. The motor must have enough torque and thermal capacity for the propeller size.

How does propeller pitch affect current and flight feel?

Higher pitch can increase speed potential and load, but it may also increase current and motor temperature. Lower pitch is often easier to drive and can be better for efficiency or stable hover, depending on the aircraft.

What is the difference between 2-blade and 3-blade propellers?

A 3-blade propeller can provide stronger grip and thrust response at the same diameter, but it usually adds load and may reduce efficiency compared with a similar 2-blade propeller. The correct choice depends on thrust target, efficiency target and motor current limit.

Why does motor weight matter?

Motor weight affects total takeoff weight, payload capacity and flight efficiency. A heavier motor may support higher load or different thermal performance, but it still needs to be justified by the aircraft requirement.

Why is bench test data not always the same as real flight performance?

Bench data is measured under specific propeller, voltage and test conditions. Real aircraft performance changes with airflow, frame structure, ESC settings, battery voltage sag, temperature and installation quality.

ESC

ESC, current and installation questions

How do I choose an ESC for a drone brushless motor?

Choose an ESC that supports the battery voltage, motor type and control protocol used by your flight controller. Its current rating should be higher than the expected operating current, and the final margin should be confirmed with ESC supplier data and real load testing.

What happens if the ESC current rating is too low?

An undersized ESC can overheat, lose synchronization, reduce reliability or fail under load. This risk is higher when propeller size, pitch or voltage is increased without checking current draw.

What is DShot?

DShot is a digital ESC control protocol used by many modern flight controllers and ESCs. It sends throttle commands digitally instead of using older pulse-based signals. Compatibility still depends on the ESC and flight controller.

Do I need to check motor rotation direction?

Yes. Each motor must rotate in the direction required by the flight controller and propeller layout. Always test motor direction without propellers installed, then install propellers only after rotation direction is correct.

Why should propellers be removed during setup?

Removing propellers during motor direction and ESC setup reduces injury risk if a motor starts unexpectedly. This is standard practice before configuring a new propulsion system.

Why does a motor get hot?

Common causes include an oversized propeller, excessive pitch, high current, poor airflow, incorrect timing, bearing wear, voltage mismatch or long high-throttle operation. If a motor gets hot during a short ground test, stop and check the full setup.

What should I check before the first flight?

Check motor mounting screws, propeller direction, propeller tightness, ESC calibration or protocol setup, battery voltage, current estimate and temperature after a short low-throttle test. Do not continue if there is abnormal vibration, noise or heat.

FPV

FPV drone motor questions

Are Pi Thrust motors the same as 5 inch racing FPV motors?

No. Typical 5 inch racing FPV drones often use small high-KV motors and small propellers. Pi Thrust focuses on 10-18 inch UAV propulsion systems, including models for inspection, aerial, agriculture, heavy-lift and large industrial UAV applications.

Can a large FPV drone use Pi Thrust motors?

Possibly, if the platform uses propeller sizes and voltage ranges covered by Pi Thrust catalog models. For large FPV, cinematic FPV, long-range or payload platforms, send the propeller size, voltage, frame size and takeoff weight before selecting a motor.

Why do racing FPV drones often use high KV motors?

Racing FPV drones usually use small propellers and need fast throttle response. Higher KV motors can spin faster at a given voltage, which suits many small-propeller setups when the ESC and battery can support the current.

Why do larger UAVs often use lower KV motors?

Larger propellers need more torque and are usually paired with lower KV motors. This helps the propulsion system drive larger propeller load without forcing excessive RPM.

What is the main difference between FPV freestyle and industrial UAV motor selection?

FPV freestyle selection often prioritizes response, durability and handling feel. Industrial UAV selection usually focuses on payload, efficiency, heat, reliability, thrust margin and stable operation over the required mission profile.
